Tips for improving mental health

Chronic stress is an obstacle to maintaining a healthy workplace, especially when it hurts your employees’ mental health. It nurtures their psychological disconnect, but it is also responsible for a loss of efficiency as part of their duties.

The anxiety and uncertainty generated by the pandemic played a part in the erosion of employee well-being, despite a gradual improvement in the economic situation. In addition to the increase in workload, the stress of employees, who work remotely or office, also come from other sources: no longer able to interact as before with their colleagues, a toxic work environment, as well as the general uncertainty that hangs over the world of work and the economy.

1. Approach mental health carefully

Addressing mental health in business is not self-evident: leaders don’t necessarily consider it as part of their responsibilities or concerns. As a result, they measure the importance of their teams’ well-being.

The transition to remote work, however, changed the game. Some managers have initiated exchanges on the mental health of employees and attentive to those who have encountered difficulties during the pandemic, particularly in stress management. These initiatives have prevented burnout.

By showing empathy, they encourage their employees to share their feelings at work. Some managers even chose to share their own galleys, at the risk of appearing vulnerable. The results are real, however, as they encourage employees to trust more. This approach allows team leaders to offer solutions even before major problems occur.

2. Talk about it more often

Many companies established programs dedicated to employee mental health and wellness in recent months in response to the pandemic. Support from team leaders is crucial to reduce team stress and avoid potential consumption. Effective and empathetic communication was already essential, but is now essential as teams are no longer physically collected in the same place. Communicating individually or in small groups with your remote employees is a good practice to set up.

“It is recommended that leaders ask each employee how he or she is feeling at least once a week,” adds NIC Brands. “This way, we make sure everyone is taken care of and leaders can offer more targeted support when needed. ”

3. Facilitate discussion and listen carefully

When you exchange with your team, listen to them carefully: How are they feeling? How do they handle their stress? Do they have moments of decompression?

It’s essential to maintain these common habits: strategize, smile and laugh together. Quick 15-minute weekly calls, as distinct from planned work meetings, are much appreciated by employees. However, don’t bring too many people together during these calls. “If these meetings include more than four or five employees, most introverts won’t feel comfortable,” explains NIC Brands.

4. Lighten your workload

Work-life imbalances also increase stress. Some employees have sometimes taken on the records of colleagues on partial unemployment or on leave as a result of the pandemic. Even if you can’t recruit additional employees at this point, you can ease your employees’ workload by using temporary employees to decipher certain activities.

You can also offer more flexibility to your employees who work remotely by offering them a mode of operation according to defined work plates, dividing their work day with breaks dedicated to their privacy or family responsibilities, such as child care. This flexibility can be a great mental relief for them.
