Reasons to reject a counteroffer

1. A risky gamble

Ask yourself what motivates these sudden favors: there is a lot to bet that your company intends to keep you only as long as it will take to find you a replacement. And once this replacement has been found, you will no longer be in the position to negotiate.

If you have accepted a job with another company, you probably believe that it is not recognized at its fair value. The first question to ask yourself: why did your employer wait so long to recognize the role you play on the team? Increased salary, more flexible work schedules, the possibility of telecommuting and additional leave are all benefits that could and should be negotiated much sooner.

2. Inquire about the salary range of the position.

By turning down the initial offer, you run the risk of ruining the company, as well as losing an opportunity that may not come twice. In most cases, employees who accepted a counter-offer eventually regret their decision after a few months. When this time comes, the company that rejected the offer may not be so enthusiastic, as it has the idea of giving you a second chance. In fact, looking for the right candidate requires a certain investment that this company may not be willing to reiterate.

3. Your interests come first

Often, an employer’s counterpart responds more to the interests of the company than to those of the employee. Even if your salary was your main reason for dissatisfaction, to the point of wanting to leave the company, use an external opportunity for an internal negotiation, hoping that the counteroffer will bring your compensation to the expected level. Salary is not the only reason for the start of employees. Support from the hierarchy, professional conditions and well-being at work are equally important factors.

If you leave the company, ask yourself about the reasons why you are being pushed and ask yourself if money really solves all your problems. In short, there are always more risks than rewards to accepting a counterpart, as attractive and flattering as it may be.
